International Conference “Archives and Exhibitions”

The conference began with a reflection on the use of archives in the 13th International Architecture Exhibition - Common Ground.

Conference organized by the Biennale di Venezia - ASAC (Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts) under the 13th International Architecture Exhibition
With the collaboration of the Regional Directorate for Cultural and Landscape Heritage of Veneto - Authority for Veneto Archives

On Saturday 20 and Sunday, October 21, Archives and Exhibitions was held, the first meeting on archives organized by La Biennale di Venezia - ASAC (Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts) chaired by Paolo Baratta, in collaboration with the Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Landscape of Veneto - Authority for Veneto Archives.

"There is no show, though devoted to the vanguard, without the use of archives," says Paolo Baratta. "For a long time, the present and the contemporary have been set in the light of previous experiences or history. The Archives and Exhibitions and Conference, promoted by the Venice Biennale - ASAC, rather than a technical conference, is the launch of an indispensable instrument of cultural organization, and it will be repeated every year at every Art and Architecture Exhibition. The Biennale is thus enriched with further and permanent research activities. "

Common ground, the living material of history

The conference began with a reflection on the use of archives in the 13th International Architecture Exhibition - Common Ground - curated by David Chipperfield (August 29, 25 November 2012). The theme of the exhibition has led the participants to reflect on issues concerning "continuity, context, memory and shared expectations". Participants were encouraged by the curator to demonstrate the importance of the influence and continuity of cultural engagement, illustrating "common ideas that form the basis of an architectural culture."

In Common Ground, 'History' is a living material: many installations incorporate archive materials and archives into a circuit of emotions, in a visionary perspective that broadens the possibilities of use. Archives and Exhibits was born from the observation that there are other ways of using archives in addition to the usual ones aimed at the historiography research.
