Biennale Arte Duemila e uno

The exhibition Biennale Arte 2001 - Platea dell'Umanità curated by Harald Szeemann, opened on Thursday, June 16, 2016 in Venice at Ca’ Giustinian. The materials were taken from the collections of the ASAC (Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts) of the Biennale di Venezia chaired By Paolo Baratta.

This is an archival version of the 49th International Art Exhibition, titled Plateau of Humankind and curated by Harald Szeemann, the great Swiss curator who disappeared in 2005.

The second Biennale by Harald Szeemann

"We return to the 2001 International Art Exhibition - explains President Paolo Baratta - to retrace the second Biennale of Harald Szeemann, crowning what La Biennale did last year on the first Bienniale that he curated in 1999.

The main novelty of 2001, with regard to the spaces and structure of the Exhibition, was the completion of the restoration of the last arsenal pavilions towards the Giardino delle Vergini.

After the edition entitled DAPERTuttO, Szeemann called the 2001 Biennale Platea dell’Umanità - Pleateau of Humankind – Plateau der Menschheit - Plateau de l’Humanité, which has been declined in several languages also to highlight the different meanings that the word " Plateau "," plateau "etc. Assumed in each idiom. "

The HIstorical Archive, a vital tool

"With this exercise - says Baratta - the Historical Archive of La Biennale proceeds in its activity in three directions: the first one, the one of the best arrangement of the collected documents; the second, to provide scholars with an increasingly effective tool for information; the third, to offer La Biennale itself opportunities for analysis and retrospective verification of salient facts of their lives and activities.

One of the main purposes of these small retrospectives is the creation of "up-to-date catalogs" of exhibitions, including images of the works actually exhibited at each Biennale, including those not in official catalogs.

In this line, the President concludes, the desire is to make of the Historical Archives a vital instrument of our institution. "

Biennale Arte 2001 - Platea dell'Umanità - curator Harald Szeemann is a reproduction of the 2001 Exposition, made with the materials of the ASAC and traced back to the Portego of Ca 'Giustinian through original documents and screens.

The initiative consolidates the program of temporary exhibitions with ASAC documents where fragments of the history of La Biennale di Venezia are brought to light.
